📌 About This Scheme

The Maharashtra Agro Processing Scheme is a strategic initiative aimed at adding value to primary agricultural produce, reducing post-harvest losses, and increasing the shelf life of food products. Maharashtra is a leading producer of fruits like grapes, oranges, and pomegranates, yet a significant portion of the harvest is wasted due to lack of processing. This scheme provides financial incentives to individuals, Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs), and cooperatives to set up units for cleaning, grading, packaging, and processing of agricultural, horticultural, and livestock products. The government provides a capital subsidy of up to 25% to 35% of the project cost, subject to a maximum limit. Key areas of focus include cold storage chains, flour mills, fruit juice units, oil mills, and spice processing. By encouraging 'Agro-Entrepreneurship', the scheme creates secondary employment in rural areas and reduces the migration to cities. It also helps farmers get better prices for their produce, as they are no longer forced to sell fresh produce at low rates during a glut. The scheme is integrated with the central government's PM-Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) to provide extra support to small-scale units. The government also assists in marketing and branding of the processed products under various state-supported brands. By transforming the state from a producer of raw materials to a hub of processed food, this scheme plays a critical role in doubling farmers' income and ensuring that Maharashtra remains a leader in India's food processing sector, contributing significantly to national exports.
