📌 About This Scheme

Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PM-JAY) is the world’s largest government-funded healthcare program. It aims to provide a health cover of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalization to over 12 crore poor and vulnerable families (approximately 55 crore beneficiaries). The scheme is completely cashless and paperless at the point of service. Benefits of the scheme are portable across the country, meaning a beneficiary can visit any empaneled public or private hospital in India to avail free treatment. The coverage includes almost all procedures for inpatient care, including pre-hospitalization expenses for 3 days and post-hospitalization expenses for 15 days, such as diagnostics and medicines. There is no restriction on family size, age, or gender, ensuring that every member of the family, especially women, children, and the elderly, is covered. The scheme targets the bottom 40% of the Indian population based on the Socio-Economic Caste Census (SECC) 2011 data. By providing financial protection against catastrophic health expenditures, which often push families into poverty, PM-JAY is a significant step toward achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Additionally, the scheme has led to the strengthening of the healthcare ecosystem by encouraging private hospitals to operate in tier-2 and tier-3 cities. It covers various critical illnesses like cancer, heart surgery, and kidney diseases. The government also continuously updates the Health Benefit Packages (HBP) to ensure the latest medical technologies and treatments are accessible to the poorest citizens of the country without any financial burden.
