📌 About This Scheme

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao (BBBP) was launched by the Prime Minister to address the declining Child Sex Ratio (CSR) and related issues of women empowerment over a life-cycle continuum. The scheme is a joint initiative of the Ministry of Women and Child Development, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the Ministry of Education. The CSR, defined as the number of girls per 1000 boys in the age group 0-6 years, had shown a sharp decline in several districts, which was a cause for major concern. BBBP aims to prevent gender-biased sex selective elimination, ensure the survival and protection of the girl child, and ensure the education and participation of the girl child. The scheme operates through a national media campaign and focused multi-sectoral action in identified districts with low CSR. It works on the ground by sensitizing local communities, training local officials, and promoting girl-friendly schools and sanitation facilities. A crucial financial component linked to BBBP is the 'Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana' (SSY), a small deposit scheme for the girl child that offers high-interest rates and tax benefits, encouraging parents to save for their daughter's higher education and marriage. The BBBP campaign has been successful in changing the societal mindset and bringing the issue of declining sex ratio to the forefront of public discourse. It encourages girls to pursue their dreams and break gender stereotypes. In various districts, the scheme has led to an increase in institutional deliveries and a higher percentage of girls being enrolled in schools. By focusing on both survival and education, the government ensures that girls grow up to be healthy, educated, and independent individuals who can contribute significantly to the country's development. The program emphasizes that 'daughters are not a burden' and promotes a culture of celebrating the birth of a girl child through local ceremonies and community events.
