📌 About This Scheme
The e-Shram portal was developed by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to create a comprehensive National Database of Unorganized Workers (NDUW). This includes construction workers, migrant laborers, street vendors, domestic workers, agriculture workers, and other similar sub-categories of labor. The main objective is to provide a single platform that integrates various social security schemes implemented by the Central and State Governments. Upon registration, workers receive an e-Shram card which carries a unique 12-digit Universal Account Number (UAN) valid across the entire country. One of the primary benefits of this card is the provision of Accidental Insurance cover through Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY) for one year; this includes ₹2 lakh for accidental death or permanent disability and ₹1 lakh for partial disability. The database serves as a vital tool for the government to reach out to the unorganized workforce during national crises, such as pandemics or natural disasters, ensuring that relief funds and food supplies reach the intended beneficiaries without leakage. Furthermore, the portal tracks the migration of workers, helping the government provide jobs and social security benefits even when a worker moves from one state to another. It aims to eliminate the information gap between the government and the workforce. By being part of this formal database, workers gain visibility in the eyes of the law, which facilitates better policy-making for labor welfare, minimum wage enforcement, and improved working conditions across diverse sectors of the informal economy.
