Iska mukhya uddeshya har gramin parivar ko ek saal mein kam se kam 100 din ka guaranteed rojgar (Employment) dena hai. Ye ek demand-driven scheme hai, matlab jab kisan ya mazdoor kaam mangega, tab sarkar ko kaam dena hi padega. Agar sarkar 15 din ke andar kaam nahi de pati, toh applicant 'Unemployment Allowance' (Berozgari Bhatta) ka hakdar hota hai. MGNREGA ke tehat hone wale kaam mukhya roop se gaon ke infrastructure ko sudharne ke liye hote hain, jaise ki talaab khodna (pond digging), road banana, kuan (well) banana, aur plantation karna.
