The Maharashtra State Rural Livelihood Mission (MSRLM), popularly known as 'UMED', is a specialized mission designed to reduce rural poverty by building strong institutions for the poor, particularly women. The mission operates on the belief that the poor have innate capabilities and a strong desire to come out of poverty; they only require the right platform and support. MSRLM organizes rural women into Self-Help Groups (SHGs), which are further federated into Village Organizations and Cluster Level Federations. These institutions provide a space for savings, mutual help, and internal lending. The mission provides a 'Revolving Fund' and 'Community Investment Fund' (CIF) to these groups to kickstart their economic activities. Additionally, it focuses on 'Financial Inclusion' by linking these groups to formal banking institutions for larger loans. UMED also provides extensive training for skill development and livelihoods, covering areas like sustainable agriculture, livestock management, and non-farm micro-enterprises. By creating a vast network of 'Krishi Sakhis' and 'Pashu Sakhis', the mission provides doorstep technical support to farmers. The ultimate goal is to ensure that every rural poor household has at least one or two sustainable livelihood sources, leading to a significant increase in their annual income. The mission also addresses social issues like health, nutrition, and gender equality, making it a holistic human development program. Through the Aajeevika scheme, it also supports rural youth with placements and self-employment opportunities, ensuring that the rural economy becomes self-reliant and vibrant.
