📌 About This Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY) is a massive food security welfare scheme launched by the Government of India during the COVID-19 pandemic to ensure that no poor household goes hungry. Originally launched as a temporary relief measure, the government has extended it multiple times, and it is now integrated into a long-term strategy to provide 5 kg of free food grains (rice or wheat) per person per month to approximately 80 crore beneficiaries. This is in addition to the highly subsidized food grains already provided under the National Food Security Act (NFSA). The scheme primarily targets two categories of beneficiaries: Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) households and Priority Households (PHH). For AAY households, the government ensures 35 kg of food grains per family per month, while PHH beneficiaries receive 5 kg per person. This initiative has been instrumental in mitigating the impact of inflation and economic shocks on the lowest income strata of society. By removing the financial burden of purchasing basic staples, the government allows these families to allocate their limited income toward other essential needs like education, health, and clothing. The logistics of the scheme are managed through the massive network of over 5 lakh Fair Price Shops across the country. The 'One Nation One Ration Card' (ONORC) integration further ensures that migrant workers can claim their free rations from any part of India, regardless of where their ration card was originally issued. The central government bears the entire financial burden of the food subsidy and logistics, making it one of the largest safety nets in the world aimed at achieving 'Zero Hunger' and ensuring nutritional security for the most vulnerable citizens of the nation.
