📌 About This Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the National Mission for Financial Inclusion, launched to ensure that every household in India has access to at least one basic banking account. It follows the 'Jan Dhan se Jansuraksha' philosophy. Before this scheme, a large portion of India’s population remained unbanked, relying on informal and often exploitative money-lending systems. PMJDY accounts come with several unique benefits: there is no requirement to maintain a minimum balance, making it accessible to the poorest citizens. Account holders receive a RuPay debit card, which includes inbuilt accident insurance cover of ₹2 lakh. Furthermore, after six months of satisfactory operation of the account, an overdraft facility of up to ₹10,000 is made available to the head of the household, preferably the woman of the family. The scheme also serves as the foundational pillar for the JAM Trinity (Jan Dhan, Aadhaar, and Mobile), which enables the government to transfer subsidies and benefits from various welfare schemes (like LPG subsidy, old-age pension, and MGNREGA wages) directly into the beneficiaries' accounts through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT). This has significantly reduced leakages and corruption in the system. The scheme also offers life insurance cover of ₹30,000 to those who opened their accounts for the first time during the initial launch phase. PMJDY has played a transformative role in rural India by encouraging the habit of saving and providing easy access to credit and insurance. By bringing millions into the formal financial fold, the scheme has empowered women and marginalized communities, allowing them to manage their finances with dignity and security. It is widely recognized as one of the most successful financial inclusion initiatives globally.
