📌 About This Scheme
The Maharashtra Sericulture Scheme, implemented by the Directorate of Sericulture, is designed to promote silk production as a highly profitable alternative to traditional crops. Sericulture is an agro-based industry that involves the cultivation of mulberry trees and the rearing of silkworms to produce cocoons. The scheme provides substantial financial assistance to farmers for every stage of the process. This includes a subsidy for mulberry plantation (vishwa), the construction of specialized rearing houses, and the purchase of rearing equipment. One of the main advantages of sericulture in Maharashtra is that it requires relatively less water compared to sugarcane but offers monthly returns once the cycle begins. The government also ensures a buy-back arrangement through silk markets, guaranteeing a fair price for the cocoons. To encourage small and marginal farmers, the scheme is often linked with MGNREGA, where the labor cost for plantation and maintenance is covered by the government. Training programs are conducted to teach farmers the scientific methods of silkworm rearing to prevent diseases and increase the quality of silk. The state also promotes 'Tussar' silk in the forest-rich districts of Vidarbha. By promoting sericulture, the government aims to create rural employment, especially for women, as most of the rearing activities can be done within the household. This initiative not only boosts the farmer's income but also strengthens the textile sector of the state. With increasing global demand for natural silk, this scheme provides a golden opportunity for Maharashtra's farmers to diversify their agriculture and achieve financial stability through a sustainable and eco-friendly industry.
