📌 About This Scheme
The Soil Health Card (SHC) scheme is a flagship program launched by the Government of India to assist State Governments in issuing soil health cards to all farmers in the country. A Soil Health Card provides specific details of the soil's nutrient status regarding 12 parameters: Macro-nutrients (Nitrogen, Phosphorus, Potassium); Secondary-nutrients (Sulphur); Micro-nutrients (Zinc, Iron, Copper, Manganese, Boron); and Physical parameters (pH, Electrical Conductivity, Organic Carbon). Based on these parameters, the SHC provides recommendations on the appropriate dosage of fertilizers and necessary soil amendments that a farmer should apply to improve soil health and fertility. The primary objective is to promote integrated nutrient management by judicious use of chemical fertilizers in conjunction with organic manures and bio-fertilizers. This helps farmers increase their crop yields while reducing the overall cost of cultivation. The scheme ensures that samples are collected every two years so that the nutrient status is updated regularly. It also helps in identifying deficiencies in the soil that might be preventing optimal crop growth. By following the scientific recommendations on the card, farmers can prevent the over-application of urea and other fertilizers, which often leads to environmental degradation and groundwater pollution. The scheme is implemented in all states and union territories, making it a nationwide effort to modernize Indian agriculture through scientific data.
