📌 About This Scheme

Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) was launched by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas to provide clean cooking fuel (LPG) to women belonging to Below Poverty Line (BPL) households. In India, many rural households previously relied on traditional biomass like firewood, coal, and dried cow dung for cooking. The smoke from these fuels causes serious respiratory diseases and indoor air pollution, which is a leading cause of death among women and children. PMUY aims to safeguard the health of women and empower them by providing free LPG connections, thereby reducing the time spent on collecting fuel and cooking. Under the scheme, the government provides financial assistance of ₹1600 for each new LPG connection, which covers the security deposit for the cylinder, pressure regulator, and installation charges. Beneficiaries also have the option to take an EMI facility for the first stove and refill. The second phase of the scheme, Ujjwala 2.0, was launched to provide additional 1 crore connections with a special focus on migrant families who may not have address proof. For migrants, a simple self-declaration is sufficient to avail the benefit. The scheme has not only improved health outcomes but also contributed to environmental conservation by reducing deforestation. It has also stimulated the local economy by creating a massive network of LPG distributorships and delivery personnel. By switching to LPG, families save significant time, allowing women to engage in other productive economic activities or spend more time with their children. The success of Ujjwala has made India one of the largest LPG consumers in the world, significantly increasing the LPG penetration rate across the country.
